EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) was developed by Francine Shapiro, Ph.D. to treat the effects of traumatic experiences such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Acute Stress Disorder as well as to address contributing factors in a wide range of other disorders and psychiatric issues. EMDR is an 8-Phase, integrative, comprehensive therapy that combines elements of numerous therapeutic approaches in ways designed to enhance treatment effects of each. EMDR is distinctive in its use of bilateral, dual-attention stimulus (bilateral eye movements, tones, or taps) to lower affective responses to traumatic memories and to generate adaptive insights and new associations.
